    Step Back By kicksindabank - 03-06-2008 10:48 PM

    =========

    Hey everyone. It has been a while since I have been here, but know I have missed you guys. Knowing you guys are learning new things and continuing the marital arts journey makes me smile.

    Right now I have taken a step back from martial arts, because my mom has been ill and I wanted to be with her right now. I am enjoying my break, but I miss being with the students.

    I do have some questions for those who have had to take a step back:

    1. How do you get the martial arts spirit alive in you (i.e practicing, working out, and keeping in shape)

    2. When do you make a come back how do you transition in from being away to being an instructor?

    3. What advice do you have while I am taking a step back?

    Holla back. Love you guys

      1. How do you get the martial arts spirit alive in you (i.e practicing, working out, and keeping in shape)

      I believe you mean motivation. For each person it's different, dependent upon their goals and why you wanted to learn in the first place. For me it was to learn how to defend myself and later to defend my loved ones. If I ever question or feel unmotivated to workout or train, I usually have a handful of movies or fight scenes that'll give me some inspiration.

      2. When do you make a come back how do you transition in from being away to being an instructor?

      I'm currently facing that issue now, as I have been away from training for awhile, however despite being rusty I have been given the opportunity to teach again. So have been taking considerable time to retrain myself into fighting condition before I take anyone under my wing.

      3. What advice do you have while I am taking a step back?

      Find a partner, workout buddy, friend... anyone to keep in you in check. If you have spare time, try and do little workouts... 10 mins consistently goes a long ways, compared to 10 hours in one day. Do sports if you can. One of the things I wish I did when I first started training was being really detailed and up to date with my notes on training and what I've learned.

        That all depends if you can handle training alone or not. If you can get sparring partners, even better. Get inspired, watch some training videos or whatever gets you excited. I think you should rework fundamentals when you do get back, if only to make sure you still "got it". Hope this helps.
