  • needing some guidance - teaching Self protection and JKD to deaf and blind students

    Hi

I am in the UK, teaching in the North of London, one area I am very interested in expanding my teaching is to deaf and blind students. I would like to learn sign language anyway, I am aware that I need to do a huge amount of investigation into this, but I just wondered if anyone taught or had taught deaf and blind students who could give me some advice or anyone who knows of the kind of sign language courses I should be looking at attending?

    Many thanks

Greetings and welcome Odd-toed. There is some good info on teaching (judo) to disabled students

Well, I would imagine that for blind students you want to focus on sensitivity drills: feeling your opponent's position and motion from a single point of contact. Grappling should be do-able. They also have the advantage of still being able to hear you.

I would also imagine that teaching deaf students, after you learn sign language, would not be too hard. Humans are primarily vision oriented anyway, so all your demonstrations would still be useful there. Though they wouldn't be able to hear the round timer...

A lot of deaf people are very good at reading lips. You can likely do quite well by always facing them and making sure you enunciate clearly.

When I trained a blind student I used his kinesthetic sense quite a bit by moving his arms the way they were supposed to go

I'm a licensed hearing instrument consultant and webmaster for a hearing aid company. I've also taken some sign language classes which had profoundly hearing impaired people in it which I got to know well.

Please don't depend on lip reading for your instruction. It's not an exact science as well and they have to have some idea of to what you are referring in order to "read your lips"

Yes, learn sign language. I use 68 point text on my monitor for one on one. For a large class you could use a projector with text.
