    Strength? By Kirjava - 06-23-2008 11:45 PM

    =========

    Hello,

    I'm a 19 year old female who does martial arts, and I'm curious about strength (specifically, in my arms). I have very weak arms and wrists, even in comparison to the few other females that train in our Dojo.

    This is generally fine, as we do not focus on strength at all, so I can still train very well. However, I would like to strengthen my arms a bit for the small things, like holding up a punching pad without my arms being thrown all over, doing push ups, etc.

    Has anyone else here done any sort of exercise to help with this, and if so, what was it? Did it work? I'm not really looking for a lot of muscle or a huge increase in strength, I'd just like to gain a small amount of strength.

    Thank you,

    Kirjava

    Hi Kirjava, the best way to increase your amount of push ups, is by simply doing it more.
    If you can't do the military pushups, do them on your knees, and you will eventually get enought strenght to do them on your toes.

    I' don't know what kind of Martial Art your doing but it probably requiers some triceps, which is used when extending the arm.

    So I'd throw the triceps training in with your pushups, while it increases your pushup amount as well.

    So try to variate between close grip and wide grip when doing them.

    You gave me little information about what you wanted out of it.

    But holding the pads steadier is depending on alot more than just one muscle group.
    So this requiers more overall training, Meaning pretty much your whole body.
    Now you decide if you want to take the effort to all that training for holding the pads steadier :P

    But if theres more factors/goals you want out if it I can understand.
    But if you say you don't need the strenght for your Martial Art, I'd use that time to improve your fighting style instead.
