    How accurate are stereotypes in defensive martial arts? By Jenna - 07-11-2011 05:29 AM

    =========

    Could stereotyping be in any way a useful tool in rapid risk assessment in a situation to help us gauge either the potential for aggression or the potential ability of would-be aggressors?

    To stereotype people is to classify them according to common formulas. How true are rapid stereotypes we might form (for example in a public place maybe a subway car etc.)?

    To get a better feel for it, in particular, have you ever asked yourself how you are stereotyped in the eyes of others? How accurate do you think that stereotype might be to them in determining how much of a threat you might be to them particularly if they are the would-be aggressor and you are their would-be mark? Do you think you would then fit well into a stereotype they might form of you? Or not?

    I hope this makes sense and is not too convoluted. Thank you.
