hello there,
just finished reading a book by Geoff Thompson called Dead or Alive: the definitive self protection handbook.
if you check out www.geoffthompson.com you will see what it is all about.
Geoff tells things like they are, non of this "i do karate and can beat anyone" stuff.
most womens self defence books just deal with the confrontation once it has turned physical
This book mainly focuses on making yourself less of a target, and has alot of interviews with serial rapists/muggers etc who speak about who they chose for victims and who they bi-pass for easier "prey"
it teaches how to spot the attackers rituals and how to respond and try and get out of situations without fighting if possible.
Goeff thompson certianly is speaking from experience. he is a veteran doorman in our city with hundreds of fights under his belt.
the book deals with the phycological side of fighting too, after all, if you cant handle the person inside how the hell are you gonna handle the person on the outside.
physical confrontations are scary as f u c k. the book speaks about controlling fear and harnassing adrenalin and talks about what you are experiencing and why.
and finally if it does turn nasty and physical is the only option left geoff speaks about the importance of attacking first with all the aggresion you can using simple moves that work, fists, headbutts(you dont expect a women to do that) knees etc, non of this X-block-reversal-spin-noodle-kick shit.
you have a choice hit or be hit, be the hammer or the anvil.
finally the book speaks about the legal system "the second enemy" speaking from experience, geoff explains what to say and what not to say after a premeptitive strike etc to persuade the court you acted in self offence.
cant think of anything else but heres a link to a brief overview of the book. the site has alot of information:
i think the book is mainly focussed for women (Geoffs wife, sharron helped make the book) i think but there is alot to learn from this book for everyone,
all the best

here is a link to amazon where you can see some other peoples reviews on the book and i think a few sample pages:
