I work with quite a few Rangers (I still havent figured out why they're with the Army Materiel Command of all groups, but meh). They're pretty cool guys. If you have any questions, I'll be more than happy to ask them for you.

I fully expect I'll leave the defense contracting industry within the next couple years for something I enjoy a little bit more. I've got a friend in the film industry who's been bugging me to go into stunt work(after I go through the necessary training and certification courses, of course) and then move into acting, and I've been giving that some consideration as its always been an interest of mine. Or maybe something else, who knows.

My Uncle is ex Air Force, and my old sparring partner was ex-AF as well (studied an indonesian art I cant spell.. pinjac silat or something like that). I mostly wanted in for the training. While I am a generally gentle and harmless person, my favorite feeling in the world is that of fighting/sparring, and I want to be in the best condition possible, so I figured they'd prolly be able to help with that.

But in the end, I really didnt want to estrange myself from my folks.

        ooooook.... that was random.

Anyhow, yea, I hate getting in fights. I just like fighting, lol, if that makes any sense. I dont want to hurt anyone, I just want to fight (and preferrably win). Which is why I do so much sparring - though I should clarify that my idea of sparring seems to be different from everyone else's. My idea of sparring is I wear gloves, and the other guy wears gloves, and we agree to TRY not to hit the other person in the face (too hard), and we go until somebody decides they're too tired to contiinue (or of course if anyone is hurt, we immediately stop, but that doesnt happen very often).

actually, catching kicks is one of my very favorite things to do What I was trying to get at is that I dont do that point crap. I hate that.. fight... fight... whoops, someone was hit, stop! wait.... fight... etc..

Nothing is forbidden, but personally, I dont want to seriously injure the friend I'm sparring with. As such, I usually wont do any throws if we're sparring on a concrete floor (happens pretty often), I wont kick the front of his knees (cause I'd rather not break them), and I wont break his nose if I can avoid it.

Granted, my partners dont always allow me the same courtesy, but thats fine by me (well, I'd really rather not get my knee broken). Just helps me get better at blocking/dodging/defending.

Of course any low-level kick would best be blocked with your own legs (whether with a kick of your own or with your shins - ouch! requires a little conditioning if you want to do it a lot - is just a matter of feasability).

Just out of curiosity, how do you catch, when you're trying to catch a kick? I tend to catch them between my forearms (clamp down from above and below with each arm). Gives the most area to catch in. The downside of course being that your arms are now occupied, so if you do it this way you have to hope that the surprise of having their foot/leg caught gives you enough time to take their other leg out (or whatever you were going to do) before they simply punch you. It's kind of a trade-off. When I would spar with the non-blackbelts at this TKD school I frequent in Jersey, I was asked by the instructor to PLEASE try to restrain from catching their kicks, as they couldnt really deal with it. It was actually difficult, as the movement had become reflex. I wound up using the catching movements to capture the foot and release it, basically just stopping the kick before it could hit me. That seemed to make everyone happier, since it was a bit more similar to just blocking or taking the hit than holding onto them.

Oh, the roundhouse grab and sweep I understand That one's easy. That one's easy enough to do even by accident.

I was just curious as to your grabs of choice for kicks. I always enjoy hearing what other people find most effective. Everyone's moves are different.

Yea, thats why it mostly only comes up when sparring with the lower ranks. Most stuff gets blocked with kicks/shins, or I'll just take the hit (not a big deal generally, I can take a solid kick most places on my body). But, every once in a while, it comes in handy

Personally, I prefer dodges even over blocks, but thats a matter of training and reflexes (takes a while to get yourself to dodge instead of block).

Anyway, its been fun, but I dont think I'll be staying. Thanks for the good conversation HandtoHand.

That TKD school must suck. We just break peoples noses if they grab legs when we say its against the rules. Personally I don't care if someone tries to grab my foot.

And the twist the foot one is a good way to end up catching the other foot in the face if the person knows what to do.

I also prefer evasion than blocking, But I'll admit trapping is more fun to work on.

I also like limb destructions as opposed to blocking.

Hey!! Just because it takes me 4 seconds to throw and retract 1 kick doesn't mean I suck
