Well, I spyed this forum and decided to introduce myself. My name is Corey McPherson, and I come from a little hick town called Jefferson, Iowa. I just turned 16 and been kinda lazy this summer. I got really hooked on UFC in sometime around April and love it. I watch some Pride, too, but nowhere near as much. A couple of days ago, it hit me that I would love to learn how to do that. Therefore, that is how I stumbled upon this sight.
I have had a lot of very minor training in different styles of fighting. My dad is pretty good, or at least he was when he was younger. He is a 7th or 8th degree blackbelt in Karate and an instructor sometimes, too. Back when we lived in Virginia Beach, he trained with some of the Navy SEALs, since it was his job to install and test many a part on the Navy ships down there. He has shown me some of the basic techniques they used in the past, things like the goose neck and some nerve/pressure points on the body. He even had an old video tape a watched 2 or 3 times. He was also appeared in the movie Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze.
But not a lot of that would be good in MMA style fighting. I have a lot of wrestling experience, though. I know some of that will help. I've been wrestling for 5 years now and almost made state my freshman year. I also fight and beat on (
) a few of my friends when they are up to it. The fights are usually 2 on 1 or 3 on 1. None of them want to get punched or kicked so we usually only win by making the opponent(s) tap out by using choke hold or arm bars or just riding them until they are too tired to continue.
I am a pretty big guy for my age, about 6'2 and 240-245. Some of it is muscle, but some of it is fat also. I'm looking to shead the fat down to about 4-8% bodyfat. I'm decently strong, but nothing spectacular. And if you are fighting an experienced fighter, a lot of muscle may not help much. Kind of like Royce Gracie vs. Kimo. Maybe that isn't a good analogy. But anyways, I have a few quick questions:
1. Would it be better to take a class that teaches MMA or a class that focuses on one single style of combat. I've heard yes and no for both.
2. What the best/a really good way of condition that I can do away from the classes I will take. I so a lot of weightlifting, and some running. Thats about it. Football will be starting soon, so that will help some.
3. What kind of supplments, if any, should I take besides protein powder. I have a GNC Gold Card, so I will get everything there.
4. Is anyone going to the MMA competition in Lake View, Iowa tomorrow (July 22nd, 2006)? It will be the first one I attend, so I hope it is fun.
5. Will anyone with links to things I should read post them? Post anything that would help the most beginner of beginners. Even things that tell/show how to do very basic moves, such and mounting and a proper guard and whatnot please. I will browse this sight and maybe find the answers to my own questions.
That's it I believe. Thanks!
