Well, I was looking for a forum where i could toss back and forth about the arts.....looks like i finally found one!
My background is in Gosoku-Ryu, a parent style for the school i am presently attending. We differ from many other disciplines in the sense that we don't compete, and the training is geared directly and almost solely toward practical self defense and personal development. This is to say that we pursue spiritual and personal improvement through our training, not trophies.
Now before anyone gets offended, i have a strong respect for the arts and other artists. However, there is a definite gap between artistic and competitive training, each type appealing to different types of students.
Well, i hope to learn alot from my time here, thanks for having me.

I understand and respect your idea of having a dedication for not only the physical side of the art, but also the mental. As I am sure that you know in Japanese we say "atama 85%, karada 15%" saying that one should use their mind 85% and their body only 15% if you would to call what you do "an ART".
I am glad to see another fellow "budo" player that realizes the more imprtant issues to be learned......yourself
