  • A Small Spaceship in a Giant Space Labyrinth

A significant feature in sustaining tension via spatial waves is the careful positioning of obstacles along the flight route. And space waves is always pushing players to change their position and go on a different trajectory rather than staying on a set track. There are wide portions that provide a brief feeling of respite, but only followed by tight passages full of obstacles placed close together. This rise and fall means the tempo never stands still, the players are always moving from observation to response to expectation. Obstacles test players not just by their size but also by their spatial placement. One barrier can appear innocuous but paired with additional structures it might create a pathway that needs precise accuracy. Players must discover the best way thru the tight spaces between the forms; the little misstep means crashing and the end of the voyage. This dynamic forces players to pay attention to the area in between and not the barriers themselves – a minor but important change in how they interact with the game. As players learn the flight route they start to understand the structure of each part, rather than only responding to the present danger. They may see a series of hurdles ahead of them and instantaneously plot the proper way thru them, creating a real sensation of momentum. The course may be made easier after a few of tries since some of the course was initially tough for players to go thru. But just knowing the problem doesn't make it go away. The faster the pace or the more complicated the structures, the more the players need to use their talents under pressure. So the trajectory of the flight in space waves is like a labyrinth that keeps changing. And each replay gives a fresh insight into the mechanics of the maze. The more they learn it, the more they want to attempt again, expecting to finally overcome that tough piece that stopped them in their tracks before.
