yeah IPON has a good idea although i would be more with grubbogoppoly in that i think it would be beneficial to do kickboxing rather than boxing to help u build up lower body strength that can be used for fighting and let u learn how to kick, then prolly moving onto like some other form of MA

Draken - I know you live in the innner city as do I .... and it doesn't seem that you have had too much trouble so far which is good!! Remember, in a den of wolves the smell blood or weakness is strong, part of survival is posturning and confidence in your walk (of course the flip side is that you can get challenges too which has happened to me). People feel strength in numbers those are bullies/punks whether they are in a gang or not. Unfortunately, if a gang attacks you can't prevent that fight and try and "Run Forrest RUN".
Street teachniques are as follows boxing, knives, guns (no MA can stop a bullet). You need solid hand skills in any MA you choose and boxing will only help to give you a good foundation. I did not suggest kickboxing only becuase, generally, the hand skills are not as strong as a pure boxer becuase most places that teach it are more"aeorobic" type of kick boxing but not authentic (anyone else with thoughts on this). A lot of boxing gyms can offer classes in kick boxing or Muay thai...those would be more legitamit (generally speaking).
Regrading your hesitation about asking the questions.....I hate to sound like Andy Rooney, but be an educated consumer. You have to almost interview the instructer to see the quality of the person and what they are teaching. I would have a list of questions to address your concerns with any MA. What is the lineage, what is the rank of the chief instructor, who is actually teaching the class, etc.
I have gone to dojos and simply ask the head instructor what is the lineage of their style...."its ummm...well karate" Ok...I understand it is master somebodiy's style what is his rank who did he study under......"umm...ancient master of many arts" So these master were dead before your master was born but while smoking weed he felt they came back to him and showed him mystical techniques....hmmmmm I see so this stlye is really Fantasy Weed Do ..... I am just joking, but making a point.
While you should always show respect to someone with more experience or rank than you ............ you do not have to respect them. If they don't want to answer your questions basically that is your answer about the instructor.
Regarding Hwa Rang Do it is a solid style but like grub said it does depend ion the instructer and their is a lot of crap in every style....remember everything sounds good if you don't know anything (no direspect) just meaning that's what Mc Dojos feed off of.
Anyway, I hope this info is helpfulLast edited by IPON; 09-25-2003, 08:46 AM.
