Ahhh, your fisrt 'chuks! You never forget your first 'chuks!

Mine were a home-made rig; a couple of wood dowels with an eye-screw on each end and a piece of chain from an old hanging swag lamp my mother had thrown away. As I was making them, a friend suggested I keep the chain long enough to use as a garrotte (about 2 feet long), so I spent about two weeks swinging this thing around in the backyard and trying to develop the same speed I had seen in the chinese movies. Then this other friend of mine came over and saw what I was doing and laughed and laughed for about an hour. He then took my 'chuks from me and I watched in horror as he cut the chain down to about four links.

Anyways, here's the link. I taught this kid everything he knows...

        p.s. watch your elbows!

Ah Yes! I remember those days. I can't count the hours I spent twirling those things around. It got old after I realized that they were too big to fit in my pocket everytime I went out. The only thing you need to know about the chucks is can you make them land and can you make them hurt. Everything you really need to know for self defense can be learned in about 5 minutes. Even that however is a moot point since you probably won't be carrying them around. All of the other twirly whirly stuff is just for fun and not worth much of anything else. Looks good though and impresses the chicks, which is the important thing anyway.

Yeah, I remember when I took my older brothers 'chucks and "borrowed" them to show my friends. I was doing great until the spirit of Bruce Lee over took me and I thought I was in Enter the Dragon II. Missed the 'chucks and split my lip!

Theres a list of all the nunchaku sites ive found so far on my site, which as it happens, is about my nunchaku techniques although my nunchaku training is all about fun and not practical martial art as such..

There is a great instructional video for nunchucks at www.nandargroup.com/Streetwise.htm that teaches you all the blocks, striking, dragging, hand spins etc.. It has a section on street fighting how to block and protect yourself. But he also, has a special edition on how to build custom made nunchucks to fit your build and hand size, which helps elimnate you injurying yourself with them. It also talks about the different cords vs nylon and chains. Check it out!
