  • Tryin' to reason with hurricane season!

Well, so far, so good! Spent the whole morning bringing in all the things laying around loose outside the Lair. Gonna take a shower, have a drink and pray for Charley to stay offshore then just die down.

Squalls out on the gulf stream
    Big storm's comin' soon
I passed out in my hammock
And God I slept 'til way past noon
Stood up and tried to focus
I hoped I wouldn't have to look far
I knew I could use a Bloody Mary
So I stumbled next door to the bar

And now I must confess, I could use some rest
I can't run at this pace very long
Yes it's quite insane, I think it hurts my brain
But it cleans me out and then I can go on

    There's somethin' about this Friday
    It's a most peculiar gray
Strollin' down the avenue that's known as A1A
Feelin' tired, then I got inspired
I knew that it wouldn't last long
So all alone I walked back home
Sat on my dock and then I made up this song

And now I must confess, I could use some rest
I can't run at this pace very long
Yes it's quite insane, I think it hurts my brain
But it cleans me out and then I can go on

Well the wind is blowin' harder now
    Fifty knots or thereabouts
There's white caps on the ocean
And I'm watchin' for water spouts
It's time to close the shutters
    It's time to go inside
In a week I'll be in gay Paree
That's a mighty long airplane ride

And now I must confess, I could use some rest
I can't run at this pace very long
Yes it's quite insane, I think it hurts my brain
But it cleans me out and then I can go on

Well, I'm alive! At least I'm much better off than some others, thank God!

Lost a few trees, two windows and a bunch of roofing. Lost electric and telephone service. We've got running water but it has to be boiled before drinking.

The wife stood in line for 4 1/2 hours to buy a generator and I've been standing in line for hours myself since then to buy fuel for the thing. But it's been a great convenience which so many others don't have. I can run a wall unit air conditioner and a refrigerator from it, so my food stores won't spoil and there's some respite from the heat. Yesterday I almost got heat stroke while working outside clearing away debris. The temperature is usually in the low 90's and the heat index (humidity) is in the low 100's.

Someone has stolen my chain saw, so I've been using an axe and a bow saw.

I have bushels of avocados, oranges, mangos, coconuts and bananas scattered all over the place; all blown down prematurely, all gone to waste.

I pray for the safety of those less fortunate than I and stay grateful for my many blessings.

Glad to hear that you are ok.

PS - those green bananas can be fried in oil and batter, right?? Don't know for sure but if you can find a bag of brown sugar somewhere it might enhance the flavor.

          Thanks. We're all doing better.

RE: green bananas; There are two kinds, the fruit bananas (which are going to waste) and the plantains, which can be cooked. Don't really need batter. You can slice 'em thin and make 'em into chips or slice them thick and double fry them into something called "tostones". But they're all really too premature and right now with this unbearable heat and no air conditioning you couldn't pay anybody enough to stand in front of a fryer.
The green little sour oranges might make some sort of orangeade or be used to flavor meats and salads, like lemon or lime juice.
The coconuts are just too much work to cut open, all the machetes are currently engaged in other endeavors. Although, if we start running low on potable water...

          Starting to rain again.

          L8r!
