I have so too seen a llama!!! my dad took me to the zoo once and they had llamas and they come from Peeroo and they have soft wool and they're really neat-o! And this llama was chewing some grass and after it had chewed it all up so it was like a paste it spat it at me - right in the face! and I thought I was gonna go blind but I dident but my shirt got like grass stains all over it! So there!

I too, have seen a llama. However I have not yet had the extreme priviledge of being spat upon.

        Llamas are the coolest!

(Actually, my thing for llamas comes from my teaching. I teach a basic class in Spanish. One of the first things my 8th graders learn is to say "me llamo", or my name is. It is pronounced may yamo, but most mess it up and pronounce the L's. In order to alleviate this problem, I tell them that they are calling themselves a big fat hairy animal that spits. [although they really aren't, but it sounds funny.])

Oso, that is the best. I think I'll actually use that in class.

The Llama - The real story

A few years back I used to go pick up my son from school at the end of the day and we'd drive past this area that had a lot of homes with acreage around them. They weren't really farms, more like agricultural residential land. Many of these places had fenced front yards where the homeowners would keep small farm animals like ponies, goats, donkeys and one particular place where they had miniature horses (about the size of a large dog) and a llama.

Occassionally, we would stop and walk up to the fence and look at the animals.

On one of those occassions my son (about 8 at the time) held a clump of grass out to lure the llama closer.

It ambled over, chewing its cud and, when it was close enough, expelled this green blast of saliva and cud at him right in his face. He turned to me, blinded, panicked, pale green and wet from mid chest up to his hair and screaming, "I'm blind! Im blind! I'm poisoned! Get me to the hospital!!

It took a very long hot soapy shower and many months for him to get over the experience. He still has not forgiven the llama, though... or me for laughing all the way home that day.

There's an old story that the first Spanish explorers pointed to a llama and asked some of the native Peruvians "como se llama?" and the natives misundertood that to be the Spanish word for the animal. They henceforth referred to the "llama" whenever they were in conversations with the Spaniards.

Tell me that's not the famous son-spitting llama we've heard so much about?

Teacher: Who can use the word "alpaca" in a sentence?
                      Student: I can.
                      Teacher: Ok, go ahead.
Student: I don't want to risk losing my lunch money, so alpaca lunch instead.
