  • Crouching Tiger/Once Upon a Time in China costume

I didn't do a costume this Halloween as I had no reason to. Next Halloween, however, my wife and I decided we're going to do costumes for the fun of it, even if it's just to wear while grocery shopping. I'd like to do an outfit similar to what Chow Yun Fat wore in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Jet Li wore in Once Upon a Time in China. Unfortunately, I have no clue what this outfit is called so I can look for patterns or garments that can be easily modified. I've been told it might be an old male form of a chi pao/qi pao/quipao/cheongsam... but searches for those only turn up the "china doll" dresses. If I try and cross reference "kung fu" with something like "costume," I get a lot of dopey Karate Kid and Kill Bill knockoff costumes and a few tai chi outfits.

If anyone has information on these outfits, I'd appreciate it.

Whats wrong with a china doll dress?

Do you have a picture from the movie of the costume you want to wear? It might be something that people here recognize. I barely ever watch TV, and have not seen either of these movies. A picture might help.
