In my copy of the popular KJV (King James Version) there is one paragraph that explains the so called Tetragramation. The four letters used to represent the divine name, customarily vocalized "Yahweh". In reading aloud, the Jews often substituted Adonai ("Lord") since the name of Yayweh was considered too sacred for utterance. The King James Version uses LORD (with all letters capitalized) as the English equivalent.
