  • Mixin' it up!

"It was only 40 years ago - on June 12, 1967 - that the U.S. Supreme Court knocked down a Virginia statute barring whites from marrying nonwhites. The decision also overturned similar bans in 15 other states.

Since that landmark Loving v. Virginia ruling, the number of interracial marriages has soared; for example, black-white marriages increased from 65,000 in 1970 to 422,000 in 2005, according to Census Bureau figures. Factoring in all racial combinations, Stanford University sociologist Michael Rosenfeld calculates that more than 7 percent of America's 59 million married couples in 2005 were interracial, compared to less than 2 percent in 1970.

Coupled with a steady flow of immigrants from all parts of the world, the surge of interracial marriages and multiracial children is producing a 21st century America more diverse than ever, with the potential to become less stratified by race. "

In a society that becomes more and more racially diverse, how will people classify themselves?

If my friend is Czech, Irish, German, Scottish, Cherokee and English wants to marry another friend whom is Brazilian, Japanese, Black, Italian and Dutch (which BTW are very possible backgrounds) will that child be...

Czech, Irish, German, Scottish, Cherokee, English, Brazillian, Japanese, Black, Italian and Dutch?

    or simply American?

If we use ethnic identities for labeling purposes, will this child who is Czech, Irish, German, Scottish, Cherokee, English, Brazillian, Japanese, Black, Italian and Dutch be more or less American than a child who is only of Polish, German and Mexican decent?

What if the skin tone of the Polish, German and Mexican kid is slightly darker than the Czech, Irish, German, Scottish, Cherokee, English, Brazillian, Japanese, Black, Italian and Dutch kid, but has less of an accent than the Polish, German and Mexican kid even though the Czech, Irish, German, Scottish, Cherokee, English, Brazillian, Japanese, Black, Italian and Dutch kid was born in the U.S.?

I'm a product of mixed heritage. Out west, ( Pacific Northwest and Oklahoma) I got labeled a "Halfbreed". Anybody old enough to remember the hit song by Cher, "Halfbreed". It's not always easy going when you come from a mixed heritage. It can be a lot of struggles. See post below.

        Love this song!!!!!

        Artist: Cher
        Song: Half breed
        Album: Gypsy Lady
        [" Gypsy Lady " CD]

My father married a pure Cherokee
My mother's people were ashamed of me
The Indians said that I was white by law
The white man always called me "Indian Squaw"

        CHORUS:
        Half-breed, that's all I ever heard
Half-breed, how I learned to hate the word
Half-breed, she's no good they warned
Both sides were against me since the day I was born

We never settled, went from town to town
When you're not welcome you don't hang around
The other children always laughed at me
        "Give her a feather, she's a Cherokee"

        Chorus

We weren't accepted and I felt ashamed
Nineteen I left them, tell me who's to blame
My life since then has been from man to man
But I can't run away from what I am

        Chorus

Lyrics > C > Cher Lyrics > Half breed Song

          Good point.

Do you think Colin Powell, Anne Curry or the likes would be where they are today if they grew up and lived in:

          Germany?
          Japan?
          Nigeria?

Can't Answer because I have never been to any of those countries.

I think race (at least in the USA) matters less to each generation growing up than it did to the one before it. I've dated girls from several different ethnic backrounds and I honestly don't feel like it ever presented a problem. I know interracial dating was intensely controversial as recently as a few decades ago but it's always been a normal and accepted thing in the communities I've been a part of. I know that isn't true everywhere but there's no denying that it has less and less stigma attached to it as time goes by.

I think Colin Powell is the sort of person that would have found a way to win no matter what circumstances he grew up under.

One of my highschool classmates whose a very lively and interesting Italian woman married a Vietnamese guy who looks like a happy Buddha. Two of my classmates (the dude is Chinese and the gal is Indian) started dating. One of my other classmates, a Navy dude, is married to a Japanese gal.

                  Oh the mixies!
