Probably not. They'll test to see if you really will bite back since these are street kids. They won't stop until someone gets hurt badly and hopefully them and not you.

That man had a cane with him and had trouble fighting them off. A blade seems more lethal though - each state has a legal size...sticks are going to longer.

I think you've identified the problem and hit the nail right on the head. The issue isn't close quarters combat. I'm sure we'd all agree that you'd need to make an example out of a few of 'em and as soon as they see that their own people are getting hurt, they'll tuck tail and run. The problem is that they are launching missiles from long distance to wear down the quarry before moving in to continue the close quarters combat. It's classic warfare tactics. Somehow, this initial attack of airborne weapons (bricks, bottles, etc.) needs to be avoided or evaded.

At this point, I don't really have a great answer short of get lost as soon as you see the mob. This is not far from where I live and now that I know they are around, I know I need to be careful. None of us are going to be good enough to dodge incoming objects flawlessly simply because of the low-light situation and the unpatterned, unpredictable nature of the objects hurled by multiple people.
