  • Tony 10,
I respect your opinion also, however I have very little use for 60 Minutes. Go back and watch their tape of Shawn Berry.
Now, read the whole interview that we forced out of them. You'll see a big difference. As far as you saying I'm big on that argument, that's my second main concern as too taking away guns. The first is it will throw this country into a civil war. There are a lot of people that will not give up their guns.

    • Actually the 60 Minutes piece wasn't on gun control, it was on how Pakistan--now a nuclear power--was teetering on becoming an Hard-Line Islamic state, along with already-converted Afghanistan. These people think Osama Bin Laden is their "Abraham Lincoln." Now, THAT scares me. Add Iran, Iraq and whoever else goes sideways after this whole Israel thing, I would rank that priority #1!

Trust me, the nuke thing might be more merciful than the biological attack that almost everybody agrees is going to be inevitable.

Finally, as far as the whole civil war thing, sure: I could see that happen. Which is why I've never suggested taking away guns!

Are you guys talking to me when you say that, or just addressing everybody on the thread?!

            • Riiiiiiight.

It's times like these when I like to quote Admiral James Stockdale, former VP running mate for Ross Perot:

Who am I? Why am I here?

'Cause in the end, I'm on a BJJ forum arguing about guns with a bunch of guys from Texas... WTF!!! What am I doing?!

If you'll excuse me, I'm gonna head on over to the Cooking Channel BB and start posting smack about my preferred brand of plastic explosives....

              • So let me get this straight, you think driver licensing is ineffective at controlling bad drivers but you think the same thing will be highly effective for stopping criminals from using guns.

There are 15,000 REAL gun laws already Tony. They don't stop criminals from using guns. They only limit law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves. Why can't you understand that MORE laws is not the answer?

Any more laws to make guns not so "EASY" to get as you say, will have no effect!!!! It's bloody simple!

Yet, you want more or differnet laws?!?! It boggles the mind why you can understand this very simple concept.

                  • The Slippery Slope argument is NOT a straw man.

Go watch the video I linked to in the first message in this thread. There you will see an old man who had his life savings WIPED OUT because some bureaucrat interpreted an administrative manual one way after another bureaucrat had interpreted it a differnet way eight months earlier.

Did you know that Hawk and I both work in the Goverment? For cryin out loud, my MOTHER is an I.R.S. Auditor!

When a fundamental tenet of our American form of goverment becomes the subject of bureaucratic whim, we get scared because we KNOW....

You may be blissfully ignorant of the awesome power of goverment gone wrong, but we are not. Hawk has probably seen the government crush innocent people's lives simply because they happend to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Once the machinery is in place it's like a boulder rolling down a hill. No one can control it. But it's too damn late then.

                    • John,

Why not treat yourself and actually read my posts before you unload on me?

You truly believe that anybody should be able to buy any kind of a gun at any time, like you would pick up a a quart of milk at the 7-11? No gun ownership requirements whatsoever? No rules? No restrictions? Arm everybody and let the chips fall where they may?

Sounds like Somalia! Kick-ass! The mostest gunest rulesest! I don't think most U.S. law enforcement personnel or ER medical staff are going to be looking forward to that scenario.

And--yawn--again nowhere did I say ANYTHING about MORE laws or NEW laws. Where did I say that? How about FIXING the EXISTING laws so they're not such a joke?

But whatever. You can stop now. Admission time: you got me. I'm just too much of a slow-witted, liberal, gun-apologist crying towel to grasp these enormous concepts. I'm really just jealous: I want to carry a gatt, but I can't because that would mean releasing the tree from my hug. And you're right: I want to take away all firearms... because I'm afraid a stray gunshot may put a crease in my hammer & sickle tattoo.

Being a houseboy for Big Brother is hard work, my man--no joke. When I'm not being a covert lackey for our Red Feds, I'm busy buzzing Randy Weaver's cabin in my black helicopter. Weekends spent spraying bar codes on the back of highway signs to guide the U.N. invading force... hey that sun gets hot!

Then it's home past dark, for some serious NPR listening under the watchful gaze of the Mao portrait in my solar-powered (Reds don't use fossil fuels!) lair, which sits on top of the local ACLU chapter office. Phew! So much oppression, so little time...

You have exposed me and my secret plan...

If... I... can... just... get... guns... out... of... John's... hands...

(This is the part in the movie where you empty your clip into me, put your shades back on and get back on your hog to ride off into the desert, Texas flag flappin' proudly behind you).

                      I am busted. You win.

Nope. Sounds like Texas a couple of years ago. All one needed then was some type of ID showing you were over 18.

I'm glad you've finally seen the light. You are now fit so I formally invivite you to move Texas where it's safe and the folks are polite because our honest citizens walk around with guns in their pockets.

Opps! Gotta go. It's 4pm and "All Things Considered" is coming on.

                            Tony 10,
The way this thread started was confiscation of guns which
is what Gore wants. Now, many of the things you want are already in place in Texas as far as background checks, etc..
Now myself personally, I don't see a ban on assault rifles or knocking out gunshows helping anyone but the bad guys. Ronin talked about "Let's ban assault rifles" but always came back to the Tec-9. That is not an assault rifle. Lots of good people are in the NRA. Many police officers, including myself, belong to the NRA. Its been around a long time and has done a lot of good on educating people on weapons. Gore made a bad political enemy in the NRA and it'll hurt him in the long run.
