Time and space for Tai-Chi!

I'm always having a hard time finding a good space for Tai-Chi. I'm really interested to hear what others have done to create space for themselves for martial arts in their own yard.

I have a backyard that might have enough space, but most of it is covered in landscaping rocks. I'd like to install some type of area just for me but it has to fit in and look cool, plus be functional.

Any ideas?

Have you tried the middle of the freeway? Very spacious from what I've heard.
