    A Study of Male Versus Female Reaction to Surprise Attack by Male and Female

    This study demonstrates some very interesting results well worth looking into by all martial artists and martial arts instructors

    ======================
    HTML Version

    =======================

    Proposed Theory: Men and women react differently when attacked by men versus when men and women are attacked by women

    Theorists and testers: John Wagner and Lorrain Butcher

    Subjects

    Subjects were broken down into three categories

    Category One: 60 Women. No self-defense or martial art training

    Category Two: 30 Women. Limited training in martial arts, self-defense or rape prevention

    Category Three: 10 Women. Experienced martial artists black belt or above

    Procedure

    A woman was taken to the center of a circle referred to as a ring. No other subjects were present during the test.

    Mr. Wagner explained to the test subject: Ms Butcher is only present to help prevent injuries. Ms. Butcher will start and stop the test. Mr. Wagner explained he would be the attacker himself. Mr. Wagner explained when Ms. Butcher yelled hajime (sp), which is Japanese for begin, he (Mr. Wagner) would attack.

    When Ms. Butcher yelled hajime she attacked instead simulating an angry woman by stating in a simulated loud angry voice

    “I know you were with my man last night and now I'm going to scratch your eyes out”

    Average Reactions to Ms. Butcher's Simulated Attack

    Category One untrained women: Froze the first moment, then tried to wrestle Ms. Butcher to the ground.

    Category Two limited self-defense or martial arts training: Froze the first moment, then executed punches toward Ms. Butcher's head.

    Category Three black belt and above: reacted to the attack immediately using throws and different strikes. Some subjects in category three used the throws and strikes in combinations.

    Follow Up Procedure

    Subjects were asked to return two weeks later stating the reason for further evaluation to compare to the first test. This time however a male attacked.

    Testing was also done using a female attacker on male test subjects again in all three categories.

    Results of Follow Up Test

    All Three Categories: Had the same response. A strike knee strike to the groin

    Conclusion

    Not a single woman attempted a knee to the female attack. Combined with the response by the subjects to a male attacker a lack of understanding of the breast and female groin as striking points is proven. This conclusion also demonstrates a lack of open discussion by instructors and the lack of practicing strikes to these areas. Most instructors interviewed justify this lack of practice in this area by stating they don't believe there is a real chance of being attacked by females.

    Not a single male being attacked reacted. They seemed to not be able to believe they were being aggressively attacked by a female.
