Fighting ability, nature or nurture?

Not ring specific i mean the ability for someone to really go to war in a fight, be it street or ring or anything.

Some people can do this and some people can learn loads of technique and look good in the gym but arent fighters at heart.

Can you make someone a fighter or is it just something that is in them?

Personally i think you can only nurture to a small degree, i think fighting spirit is either there or its not.
