I knew a family that left the front door open on evenings with nice cool weather, while they slept.

Parking your compact car inbetween 2 SUV's at night in a bar parking lot.

Leaving your purse and or kid in the shopping cart then walking away from it to shop.

Putting the Big Screen TV box out with the trash days before pick up day.

Well, there was this one guy who was always looking over peoples shoulder checking out their name and adress on their checks, memorizing their PIN numbers and whatnot...

    Situational Awareness/Self Defense 101

Self Defense starts way before you take up a non threatening posture and start your verbal threat de-escalation, it starts with situational awareness. I have a habit when I’m out in public of watching the mistakes that people make that expose them or make them easy targets for an attacker. Cell phones and I Pods are the number one distraction that makes people vulnerable. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a store and remembered someone’s name and address from glancing at a check, or watched someone put their PIN in at the teller while using a debit card. I’ve passed numerous open pocketbooks in unattended shopping carts at the grocery store. I’ve seen people leave the mall and put armloads of bags in their car then return shopping. That’s the perfect opportunity for a would be thief to smash and grab. I used to say “what are people thinking”, now I just shake my head because I realize that they aren’t. What are some of the things that that you know of or notice frequently that can set people up for a bad experience?
