Vietnam was similar, in that it was a limited war with limited objectives. The goal was never to go in and win a war as most people think. It was a political war used to further political agenda. Most people think that when they go to war, the goal is to kill the enemy and win. These wars are different in that if they could be done without killing the enemy we'd rather do that. If we used all of our might to win this war, other countries would aid the enemy and that is something we are trying our hardest to prevent. But I think that causes problems of its own that we haven't learned how to deal with yet. Its kind of a new idea; a strategic war where all commands come from Washington.

These are professional soldeirs that are trained to kill and put into a warzone. They're not there to actually kill though, more of a visual deterrent. And they have so much extra time on their hands that they can stand around and take pictures. The soldiers know that if the military was allowed to run the show, the war would have already been over. Our military is the greatest on the earth and soldeirs know that. But we're not allowed to do that; washington runs the show, and I think that some soldiers feel (like the article said) that we're treating our enemies with "The Royal American Treatment."

I think the soldiers feel we are treating our enemies too nice, and because of that, they start to lose respect for them. Its like fighting a kid where you tie an arm behind your back...whether they win or lose, you won't respect them because you weren't able to give them everything you had.
yeah, a true warrior always respects their enemy. But you cant really blame these kids. They wanted to be soldiers and that's what they were trained for. Instead they're mostly babysitters Protecting the enemy. They're in a very scary place with too much time on their hands to think about the situation. Of course they're going to be childish. Instead of being soldiers, they're going to be the 17&18 year old kids they really are.

I looked at some of the pictures posted on the site in question. I didn't see anything pornographic (go figure) mostly because I was looking at Iraq and Afghanistan pics labelled "for access." That indicates which pics were submitted for free access to the site. I looked at several dozen pics. All of the ones I looked at were very benign and almost all typical soldier pictures. Soldiers with their buddies, showing off their vehicles, hangining out with their friends, or talking about their weapons. I didn't see any dead bodies (though I quit looking after about 25 pictures or so) and in the section I was in at least, I saw no porn. Not to say it isn't there (it's an obvious porn site after all), but most of the soldiers posting pics there were wrapped up in forum discussions about coming home safe.

Still. People need to be aware that if they want to come home any time soon, it would behoove all of us, especially those fighting over there, to hold dear the ideal of Iraqi independence and security. I have a feeling most of the guys showing dead bodies off with smart-assed macho comments are low-level grunts with ego issues to begin with. A lot of guys I know coped with the tougher times of having to kill and see what it looks like up close by putting on a macho face. In some cases, it was years later before they finally managed to cry about it. In my experience, the guys who are of solid character and didn't have a problem with the killing never had to look back and face any demons at all. They did their duty, and that was that. They never had to posture or show it up, and they had a somber respect for what war does to both sides. Those men were, in my mind, true warriors. All the BS like Abu Ghrahib and the photos you mentioned are indicative of a more warmongering mindset than that of a real soldier - and it's a damned shame.

Evidently you didn't follow the link far enough. I visted the news report site and found a direct link to the pictures in question. Being 13 I'm not in the military but I'd like to say that if I was I'd damn well shoot anybody who'd take images like those sooner than I would let them post them on a public website. I'm disgusted and those men should be immediately executed.

You know, I've been arguing with myself about whether or not to post this, but I feel like I should. I will warn anyone and everyone that the material is unsuitable for all kids and most adults. It is everything that's wrong with humankind right now, and I hate that things like this even exist in the world, except to show us what we're up against. Take a look at some of these next time someone says we're being too harsh on prisoners of war. Next time someone tries to convince you that diplomacy is the option we should be focusing on, direct them here and ask if they'd like to be the ones to volunteer to go sit down with these folks and chat about peaceful options. You knew it was real...you could tell what tissue was being torn, what was being seperated...still breathing, or trying to....the look in his eyes was...I can't begin to describe it.
I remember trying to turn it off (I knew it wasn't tapping drills... and I could tell it was real when the knife went in)...but the sound kept playing because my computer used to lag...so I pulled all the chords out of the wall.
It took me at least 3 minutes to catch my breath...I was in between sobs, and being sickly ill....

I cannot even IMAGINE the types of people who are in that market, or who consume that type of product....but they are the most depraved, perverted, and uncouth type of slime walking this earth.
