I'm sure a lot of people sit back and think it's wierd to go through those kinds of things "just because," but I think it's one of the only things that will ever set you apart from the rest of the "sheeple" we live among. To them, it may just be a hike or a run. Fine. To us, it's one more bill we've paid. It's one payment closer to being a warrior and not a "civilian." Corny or not, I think that means something.
Thanks, Mike. I'm glad there's others out there .

We do alot of calisthenics in between too and sometimes as punishment. 8-count bodybuilders, pushups, squat thrusts, hello-dollies (leg scissors), leg raises, jumping jacks, dive bombers, low ski positions, bear crawl, log roll, pushup position, duck walk just to name a few. I'm sure you've probably maxed out on all these excercises beyond the normal limits.

The 26 mile, 50-lb pack run at high elevation sounds like a bad ass run!!

The farthest I've ever run without pack is 7 miles, so yeah you've exceeded most people's standards by far. After bootcamp ends, I am going to cut my running down to 2 times per week and spend more days getting my pool mileage up, so that I can heal but not loose any gains. Before bootcamp, I was swimming a mile every other day.

The week after that, I am going to resume regular running and start pressing for atleast one 10 mile run and atleast 3 miles per day, ideally at a 7:30 minute pace. I'm also going to try some 1-2 mile pack runs with atleast a 40-lb pack. One thing for sure is that I'm not afraid to reach the puke point......is this how a soldier earned the name "puke"?

Please keep us updated on Scott.

        Day 10

Today was the last day at boot camp. We completed a physical fitness test. All of my scores have improved, but here they are as of today:

        Jumping Jacks (2-min): 177
        Pushups (2-min): 107
        Situps (2-min): 90
        Squat thrusts (1min): 28
        Squat-thrust-jumps (1min): 20
        8-count body builders (1min): 19 (= 3 sec to complete 1)
        1.5 mile timed run: 11:01 (= 7:15 min/mile pace)*

I need to get my running time down!!!

We finished up, recieved our diplomas and got something for the instructors and got a chance to chat with one of them more socially. It felt good.

        I graduated in class #129.

Finally, I get a chance to eat bon bons and drink whiskey....just kidding, instructors !

        Final thoughts:

Physical - The better runner you are, the better prepaired you will be for bootcamp. There are some aspects of strength, some aspects of agility but the two biggest killers: muscular endurance and cardio vascular stamina! If you're in decent shape, I'd recommend that you run consistently for 3-6 months before starting this program. Before bootcamp, I ran consistently for about 45 days and it wasn't nearly enough - I've never been a strong runner, but that's gonna change day by day.

The head instructor has a prep-video that you can purchase.

Mental - Fatigue will cause you to make mistakes, which will in turn earn you additional excercise and some attention. This has happened to all of us over the past 10 days. Listen to the instructors, do what they tell you, when they tell you and how they tell you to do something and that will show you've got some attention to detail. Never give up. You are bound to have both strengths and weaknesses or worst case scenario, you've been eating bon bons and whiskey for years and have decided on a whim that this is the thing for you. You will depend on your team mates to get you through your weaknesses, likewise they will depend on you.

Our team was pretty good about sticking together. It all makes sense now.

Social - Address your instructors properly. Acknowledge their instructions and carry them out. You will make mistakes, but gather your focus again and go at it again. Get to know your teammates - you will grow closer and closer to them as the days go on. Don't take the instructors aggression and chaos too personal - keep in mind, they are trying to motivate you and strengthen your body and will. If you have an ego issue or are really sensitive, this may not be your thing.

I've never done anything like this before. I'd recommend it to anyone here in the defend.net community if you're trying to improve your fitness, would like to experience instruction in a military environment, trying to loose weight or looking to test your entire being and mental fortitude.

Total weight loss = 12 pounds and its noticeable.

        HOOYAH INSTRUCTORS!!!!!! HOOYAH CLASS #129!!!!!

Since graduation, I've had a lot of curious folks ask me about the program and the best advice I gave them was to do it themselves.

A few guys want me to go through mini BUD/S first to see if maybe they can do it. Don't wait for me to do it!!

PM - me and we'll carpool or meet down there together. I'll do it in '07.

I remember one time back in 3d Marines we had this Prick C.O. that just loved to dog us... went through a Ranger type training evolution at PTA(the big island,Hawaii) where we ate like one MRE a day and slept for only like 2 hours a night, we rucked it everywhere we went... it was the most exhausted I've ever been in my entire life, when we got back to base, the whole company went on like a 15 mile, death run, some of it ran in Bruce Lee fashion, fast paced running, interspersed with sprints, and back to steady running... and then back to the company area for push ups, pull ups, and situps that I thought would never end... that was fitness.

                I'M NOT WORTHY!!!

wish they had a bootcamp program like this in the San Francisco bay area, I would encourage my fatass coworkers to attend with me; but too bad most bay area liberals are a bunch of pussies who's idea of a rigorous run is when they go to starbucks for caramel machiattos

Honestly Mike, I like my coworkers, but some of these guys whole lives revolve around money and money alone, it's pretty pathetic.. they smoke fags all day, eat too much, drink too much, they wouldn't last 5 minutes...
