  • Indoor herb garden shelf

I would like to create an indoor herb garden with a shelf similar to the picture below, but I am a beginning woodworker (so fancy rounded corners might be a bit too much). The inside should be waterproof so I can fill it with water and it would serve as 'groundwater'. This also means it should be waterproof. The length should be 150cm, height around 20cm and depth around 20-25cm. It should be able to hold 140x20x10cm of soil and plants. The part in the back can be screwed to the wall. Can someone help me figure out how I can build this?

I think that with just plain straight cuts with dimensional lumber would be fine. You can waterproof the tray with a couple of light coats of epoxy.

I used shiplap strips from the big box store to make a similar shelf and it worked out great. Just be sure to seal the wood well if you're putting indoor plants directly on it—water can really mess up an unfinished surface. Also found that putting a little lip on each shelf keeps pots from sliding off easily.
