Pardon me if this has been talked about before. I searched “smart tv” and “television” without finding anything.

In our vacation home, we have smart TVs that are on WiFi and can connect to Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, etc. They are ONN brand from Walmart. They have been there for a year and work great.

At our home, we have dumb TVs. In the living room I have a Sony DVD player that is WiFi enabled and can do all of the above, except for Prime Video, which Sony apparently doesn’t play with. Works “OK” about two thirds of the time. Tends to freeze up, endlessly buffer, refuse to respond, even when the internet service is perfectly fine. The Sony box will freeze and I will find that I can pull up programming on the Chromebook, no problem. So it seems to be the Sony box, not the internet. Infuriating.

So, I am inclined to go buy a smart TV for the living room. I’m leaning toward ONN, because they seem to work fine and don’t seem to cost much.

A friend suggested trying an Amazon Firestick or similar device as an alternate solution.

Any thoughts or knowledge on this would be appreciated.

I can't give a brand recommendation but over the past four years we have had to replace all our tv's because they had processors that were just not powerful enough to process all the data thrown at them.

I stuck with a basic model and added what I needed. For live TV and sports, I've been using https://uk-iptv.uk and it's been solid—tons of channels and it loads fast on my Firestick. Saved me from paying for a bunch of stuff I wasn't even watching.
