  • Colonoscopy advice

My wife has been having really bad stomach cramps, diarrhoea and some blood in poop. Dr did a barrage of tests. Fit test came back ok but Calprotectin was 380. She has since had a colonoscopy where 3 small polyps were removed and the dr also did 6 biopsies throughout the path she took. Is it normal to take biopsies regardless of it all looking “very healthy” as the dr said or does she suspect something else? From what I’ve read a Calprotectin level such as her can indicate cancer. Wife thinks all is ok and not to worry now dr said this but I was diagnosed with cervical cancer 10 years ago after being assured it wasn’t. So a little sceptical and would rather be in the know.

    Thank you

I am sorry to hear that your husband has been having various issues with diarrhoea and some blood in his stool, this has obviously been alarming for you both. You state that the Fit Test has come back okay and that the Calprotectin level was 380.

It’s pretty common for doctors to take biopsies even if things look normal during a colonoscopy—sometimes issues don’t show up visually but show up in tissue samples. With a Calprotectin level like that, they’re likely being extra careful since it points to inflammation, which could be linked to IBD symptoms. My friend went through something similar, and even though his colon looked fine, biopsies helped catch an early issue.
