  • Are you a fancy restaurant person?

This week we celebrated my daughter's 21st birthday with a family dinner at Automatic Seafood and Oysters. The chef there recently won a James Beard award for Besf Chef in the South.

It was $600 of meh for eight people as far as I was concerned.

I had Gullah shrimp with crab rice which was decent but honestly overspiced.

I will admit that I do not generally enjoy high-end restaurants, as I feel they are way overpriced and overhyped. I have never understood the high-end foodie culture.

A really good steakhouse is an exception, but even then I'm not sure the experience is worth the price.

Birmingham has a very good reputation for restaurants, but I love finding dives and basics over "gastronomic experiences."

$600 for 8 is not what I would call exceptionally "high-end", especially if that total included some wine and such.

I’m more of a casual eater too, but every now and then it’s fun to try something fancy. On a trip to Tasmania, I ended up going to a couple of hobart restaurants that were surprisingly chill, even though they had amazing menus. The vibe wasn’t stuffy, just good food and good service. It changed my mind a bit about what “fancy” has to mean.
