  • Permitted Development Rights Caravans vs Steel building for temp agricultural workers

Hi, I was planning a Prior Notification application for Permitted Development Rights to my local council, when it occurred to me that I could include a steel and metal sheet building that could be used for seasonal workers.

I was going to put wooden chalets (as they come under the government caravan definition of a caravan), using the 1960 Caravan act. But when I priced them, I thought the Steel building would be better and more cost effective long term.

Has anyone applied for Prior Notification for an steel agricultural building to house seasonal temporary workers? Is there any reason why this PN would be stopped by the local council? Surely the council would want a well made steel building rather that caravans?

Thanks for any help on the matter.

We did a steel framed agricultural workers unit a few years ago which was replacing 10 caravans. I think we put it through under full planning but I can see why it might be possible under a Part 6 application.

We went through something similar with a seasonal worker project and ended up looking at steel buildings instead of caravans. The council didn’t push back once we showed it was a proper structure, solid and safe. We actually checked out https://www.murraysteelbuildings.com/ – their designs made the whole planning and installation smoother than expected.
