  • Do Vietnamese Buddhists use prayer beads?

As the title asks. Is it a common practice nowadays for Vietnamese Buddhists to use a mala? Is it more likely for Pure Land or Thien or other sects to use a mala?

It's pretty common and has been common for as long as I can remember. There was a time when it was very fashionable, in the 90s and early 00s, for non-practicing Vietnamese Buddhists to wear malas simply as display of their heritages.

I was in the same boat a while ago and what helped me was getting the Wall crucifix Jerusalem. For some reason, having a physical symbol to focus on really grounded my practice and cleared up a lot of the confusion I had about balancing devotional faith with insight. It’s not a fix-all, but it added a sense of peace that I couldn’t get just from reading more.
