Just here to share . we went to a restaurant today with friends and their kids. LO has a soy and dairy allergy, and unfortunately pretty much everything there was cooked in oil with soy. French fries, grilled chicken, eggs, etc. The only thing my LO (or I) could get was a side of fruit . we always bring extra food and snacks with us so we didn't go hungry or anything, but it just breaks my heart. One of the kids kept asking why my LO wasn't also eating the fries. LO is too little to understand that they have an allergy, but perceptive enough to start to pick up on things. I don't want them to miss out on stuff or feel different as they get older. Can anyone relate? How are you explaining allergies? Any tricks for making restaurants smoother (aside from calling about the menu ahead of time)?

I experienced something like this. We went to a friends house for an adult birthday party.

I’ve had to call ahead and ask to speak with a manager or chef before going out, just to be safe. Some places are super helpful while others aren’t clear on what “soy-free” really means. It reminds me of our trip to India — we found a rooftop bar Mumbai locals recommended, and they were super careful with soy since they made everything fresh on-site.
