What a week.... My luck is in the toilet...
We discovered mold in our a/c closet at the apartment I live(d) in. I asked apartment maintenance to come check the apartment, after my wife had been sick for the last month and a half. She eventually noticed a pattern that she kept feeling bad when she was at home.
Well, my wife and I had to move within a week, and we ended up having to throw away all our furniture, and most other things due to mold in our apartment. I also found mold on other items!
We live in a fairly new apartment building. I have lived there almost 3 years, and I was the VERY FIRST person in that apartment. I am a neat freak, and we keep it very clean.
About 1.5 months ago, my wife started coughing and feeling bad. It just continued. She noticed she felt worse at home. One day, I went to the apartment office and asked them to come check the a/c system, just to see if there was any mold. They came and checked the a/c closet with a flashlight. Black mold everywhere! (I have bad neck issues and cannot look up - so I never saw it all growing in the upper part of the a/c closet)
The maintenance people sprayed some chemical to kill mold, but it was so strong it triggered my asthma. We ended up leaving for the day, and the smell actually stuck around for a couple of days. It was horrible.
I contacted a mold specialist, and had him come take some air samples. He stated that what apartment maintenance staff did was incorrect, and there was still active black mold. Hiring that specialist cost me almost $600. The air samples showed penicillium. I used that information to get out of my apartment lease. But, in less than a week, I found a new apartment, signed a lease, set up utilities and renters insurance, and lined up movers.
We moved last week - and a few hours after the movers delivered everything, I started to look at our stuff. My wife's memory foam mattress had mold growing on the bottom of it (see photo). The particleboard on the back of my son's dresser appeared to have the same thing (this was near that a/c closet with the mold).
After talking with that mold specialist, we threw away pretty much all our furniture (sofa, dressers and nightstands with that same particle board on the back), chairs, mattresses and box springs, etc. All boxes had to be thrown away. Some clothes were thrown away. Anything with foam in it was thrown away. I also had to throw away some shoes. I even found something growing on the inside of the Rubbermaid silverware holder that goes in the drawer (it is lined with this green rubber inside of the plastic - and it would not come out when cleaning it).
Everything else we could keep had to be rubbed down with a special chemical to kill mold spores!
We've had to pay for two apartments for the month of March, pay movers, pay a junk man to come get all our furniture to throw away, but a new bed, and tons of other items.
We are out of money, and I have charged over $2000 in the past week alone. Renter's insurance in Texas doesn't cover mold either. My wife also went to the doctor, and they prescribed an oral steroid to help her get over this.
Then, last week, I hit a deer on the way to work, in a car that was not even a month old. It still had the temp tags on it.
My luck just sucks....
