After doing a mix of research and traveling, I've decided I want to make it a bit of a life quest to explore the "public access" college golf scene across the US. D1 programs require challenging courses for their players to cut their teeth on, and many of these programs have their own university-owned course with public access, often at very affordable pricing. In short, a lot of these courses may not make any "Top 100" lists but they can be excellent value plays on road trips. From my own research/experience, examples of what I'm talking about that come to mind include (in my neck of the woods) Duke, Virginia Tech, U. Kentucky, U of Wisconsin, Penn State, etc.
I'm loosely familiar with the "Top College Courses" in the USA, and would love to one day get on at Yale, Stanford, Michigan, etc., but I'm looking at sort of the "next tier" of courses that are affordable public access and a good test of skill. I know very little about the scene out West or down South. What should be on my radar if I ever find myself in a college town?
