  • Are short filmmaking courses worth it for international students?

I’ve been thinking about getting into filmmaking, but I’m not sure if committing to a full degree is the right step for me right now. I’ve seen a lot of short-term courses and workshops, especially ones open to international students, and they seem like a good way to start.

Has anyone here taken short filmmaking courses abroad? Were they actually useful in terms of skills, networking, or career opportunities? Would love to hear your experience and any recommendations.

Jumping in on this older post because I’ve taken a couple of short courses as an international student, and they helped me figure out what part of filmmaking I actually enjoy. They’re great for building a small portfolio fast. The main thing is to check how much hands-on work they offer. Did you have any specific countries or schools in mind?

I got a big boost in my early projects after joining a film school that let me jump straight into shoots and workshops instead of sitting through long theory blocks. Getting to build a real portfolio with guidance from working filmmakers made things click faster for me, and the industry-led sessions were a game changer for confidence on set.
