  • International Driving Licence

    Hi,

We are going to Italy in August and have arranged car hire.

The documents say we need an "international driving licence". I assume this is some Brexit related thing, I suppose my UK driving licence is no longer an "EU driving licence"?

    ''International Driving Licence:
Please note that if you do not have an EU driving licence you will need to bring an international driving licence along with your original
    licence to rent the car.''

I have an "international driving permit" that I got from the post office and I was told that I can use this in Italy, is this one and the same?

    Thanks,
    David

Jumping in on this older post because rules can shift a bit: many car hire firms in Italy now list on their booking pages whether they want an IDP, and some ask for one even if the law doesn’t. I’ve seen differences between companies at the same airport. Has anyone rented there recently and been asked for an IDP at pickup?

I rented in Italy last year and the desk asked for an international driving permit even though my UK licence was valid, so I was glad I’d sorted one. I used an international driving permit service that gave me a quick digital copy plus a card, which smoothed things out with insurance too. It took minutes to apply and saved me a bit of hassle at pickup.
