What breathing method should be used when running? When I tried breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth, I got short on air. I naturally breath in and out through my mouth while running, but I've heard that it's not good to breath in and out through your mouth? Any suggestions. thanks.

I don't know if you are asking about sprinting or jogging but when I jog I give a count to 4 when I breath in my nose and another count of 4 when I breath out my mouth. I guess it really depends on your pace. While I sprint though I don't even breath through my nose. I don't know if its bad form. Nobody ever told me it was.

my shifu has always told me try to breathe in through ur nose and out through ur nose
this is because at shaolin we believe that heavy breathing through ur mouth loses more chi (energy) than through ur nose.
and when ur nose is too blocked u can get away with breathing in through ur nose and mouth at the same time expiring the same way.
I find this method works well for me cant really say if it improved my performance as it was so long since shifu told me to do this, i honestly cant remember.
To be honest though im suprised u brought this up i thought it was the accepted western general method of running, i thought shaolin were the only 1s that breathe through noses's when running

Well breathing in through the nose and out the mouth is the general accepted way but sometimes I guess there is a little bit more to it like timing. I always like to compare it to car. Ever wonder why drag racers are so loud? Thats just the car exhaling lol. Also they tell you to breath through the nose and out the mouth so as to expel the carbon dioxide faster and away from your nose which is about to take in some more air. Those are just some ideas I have.

Ooh also I almost forgot. How are you breathing karateka? Do you inhale using your stomach muscles or are you using your chest muscles? This is important because you can breath much more powerfully using your stomach. Kinda like how they teach people to kia or that karate yell you hear so often.
