I just twisted my ankle, but I am eager to be running again. I was sick for 5 days prior to twisting it. It won't be bad for recovery if I run on my ankle will it? I twist my ankle about once every 6 months, is that common?

I agree with the previous post. If you twist it every 6 month, it means that probably you have an unstable joint (generally speaking). Problem is, once you stretch ligament over dynamic stretching limit, it NEVER regains normal tension level. That means it can not do what it suppose to do-provide stability for the joint. If you had massive trauma to that leg before, that probably the case. Sea the doctor, get it treated, stop running for a while. After it heals strengthen muscles around the hill, so they can provide extra stability for the joint.

I run on it frequently though. It's once every 6 months.... it's not THAT common. It's usually fine. Do I really need to see a doctor? I have seen a doctor about it, but he didn't really say anything, I don't think he really knew what he was doing. He just told me that it would heal as long as I didn't twist it again.

trust me, get it checked asap. i sprained it very badly years ago. i iced, rested, did everything they said. well last summer after i was recuperating from breaking both arms in a company softball game, i woke up to find my ankle swolen. i went to a good friend of the family who is an orthopedic surgeon and said that he was scheduling me an mri, and i had to get reconstructive surgery on my ankle. so get it checked out my friend so you can prevent further injury.

The majority
of twisted ankles result in just soft tissue damage, and whilst this may sound like a minor injury it can sometimes be more painful, and take longer to heal than an actual bone break.
I twisted my right ankle quite badly in 1994, and it still swells up to this date whenever I spend too much time on my feet.
To protect yourself in the future, you first need to rest the injury and let it heal properly, and then get yourself to a sports physiotherapist. This should help

I finally got a consultation from an amateur athlete who is also a doctor. I am going to get a brace and wear it until my ankle is stable, and then run on grass, and build up to hills. I also think I might do some yoga in a few weeks to help build up the stabilizer's around the ankle.... and I figure increased flexibility will prevent other injuries. While it may not be the most masculine thing to do, I can't complain about being surrounded by females. lol.

but still, that whole "every six months" thing baffles me, in my opinion though, maybe the idea that your ankle sprains alot is from the way u run...possibly the turf u run on...i mean, i run on mountain like trails, sandy and rocky earth, and at first i had to watch out drasticly, making sure my footing was good, and now my ligaments are well adapted, running on the rocks nicely. so just make sure to build up slowly...dont rush it at all mate,
peace
