  • Swiss Ball

Does anyone use the Swiss ball as part of their martial arts training? I haven't actually used one before, but I've heard from many people that it's quite a versatile bit of equipment. I know there are a variety of exercises you do with it to strengthen your abs etc.

They are great for press ups and flexibility (stretching).

It's a great piece of equipment that definitely has its place in martial arts training. There are a lot of different exercises you can do with the ball. It would be worth your time to learn how to use it properly.

Hi Steven. I just got one, literally yesterday, after seeing a Senshido video (Combative Strength Tape 2) which I will soon review.

I must admit I previously laughed at them, thinking that they are for old ladies and wimps like Spanky. But they are not. You know how you can make press ups easier by leaning your hands against something higher then the floor (putting more weight on your feet instead)? Well, try that with a Swiss Ball - press ups feel like hell!
I'm currently looking at a whole host of exercises with them.

I also bought some inflatable "wobble boards". They are small inflatable discs that you stand or sit on when performing exercise. They force you to use your whole torso muscles to balance and are, again, another great piece of kit. Even shadow boxing is a major challenge.

If you want a link to a supplier let me know. I'll post one. I have it at home (I'm currently at work). I went for the "Pro" version, as it is guaranteed to be able to hold 500kilos, not that I'm likely to challenge it. Cost about £25. The others are about £10 less.
