  • Question about weight lifting. Please help I'm New!

Hi I'm new to this weight lifting thing and martial arts. Right now my main goal is to gain some muscle and basically get stronger. I'm only 14 by the way. I would just like to know which one of these is better.

Now lets say I am going to be doing 3 different excersisez for 3 different muscle groups on three different machines. Lets say the muscle groups are Biceps/Chest/Back

Would it be better to do set1 on the first machine ....rest for 45 seconds....do set 2....rest again and do set 3...and then move on to the next machine.....OR would it be better to do set 1 on each machine.....and then do set 2 on all the machines and then do set 3 on all the machines

This may sound sort of confusing so I'm sorry if you do not understand me. Also if you can give me any pointers on working out and especially stuff on cardio and this PROTEIN stuff that would be very helpful. I am about 5'10" and weigh 132 pounds. I'm pretty skinny for my age**I THINK** and I would like to burn body fat on the treadmill but NOT BURN MUSCLE so if you have any pointers on this kind of stuff it would be VERY HELPFUL to me. Thanks alot guys

PS: **?? Is milk good ??**

Ok, as to lifting, keep to lighter weights (10-15 reps per set, 4 sets). The last couple reps should be challenging but not impossible. You are still growing and your bones and muscles are not ready to train heavy. For Protein, take in 120-140 grams per day. Try to space it out a little. 20-40 grams per sitting, and drink LOTS of water. Shoot for a gallon a day of water. Not gatorade, or soda, or beer, water. Extra protein intake is hard on the kidneys and the water will prevent any problems there.

As to the treadmill, just keep your pulse between 150-170 beats per minute and you will be fine. Try to go for 30+ minutes. Its more important to go for a long time, than to go fast.

14 is a little young for lifting weights, kid. You're going to naturally gain weight as you get older depending on your genetics and you might gain a few inches in height too. Check with your doctor and get a physical before you start training.

Try this routine and tell me what you think:

      stretch/warm-up

Push ups - Do as many as you can. Rest for 1 minute. Next set - Try exploding with your arms off the ground and into the air, clap in the air and reset your hands for the down part. If you can't do the clap, just try and launch yourself as high as possible.

Chinups - Get to a chin up bar in your gymnasium. Do as many chinups as you can with your palms outward. Rest for 1 minute. Do as many as you can with palms toward you.

Jump Rope - Jump rope at a fast pace for 2 minutes. Rest for 30 seconds. Jump rope again at a faster pace for 2 minutes.

Sprints - Run up and back on your football field as fast as possible. Rest for 1 minute. Repeat 3 times.

Situps - Lay on your back and do as many situps as you can in 2 minutes. Rest 30 seconds. Repeat 3 times.

BTW by the time you're 18, assuming you eat a good diet, train regularly and depending on your genetics you could easily weigh 180+ lbs and have little body fat.

                Just be yourself, kid.

Bruce is cool and all, but he's old school.

You ought to check out the Klitschko bros (boxing); both doctors and ranked top 10 or Genki Sudo (see thread "David vs Goliath")

I would also suggest you cut back on your lifting schedule. Try a four day schedule, day 1 chest tri's, day 2 shoulders, day 3 back bi's, day 4 legs. Keep it light concentrate on your form. Body resistance excercise's are good too. You could try alternating one week lifting one week on Tom's program. But he's right your body needs to grow. Make sure to eat yer damn veggies. I hear Bruce loved spinach, or maybe that was Popeye?

You said you wanted to be like Bruce. Now you want to compete in the UFC? Try quitting the Indonesia - you know its illegal, right ...jk

Quitin' time for the clock watchers! - now go home and kick your dog

Congratulations! Your the first teenage boy (age 15) to give birth AND to loose the associated weight!! And you haven't had women begging you for the secret or offering payment in exchange for it.

Lossing 40 pounds in a month isn't smart nor safe for a 14 year old. Like other members said your still growing. You need fat (not like that your overweight or anything) and your vitamins and other healthy foods.

I would not suggest to take any protein shakes or anything that just mainly contains protein. Protein is hard on the kidneys and if you intake too much for too long it will result in bad kidneys. A study was done among americans and it said that americans consume twice the protein we need each day.(assuming your american)

Now on weight lifting... Weight lifting is great but not at your age. Do Tom Yum's plan, its great for building up strength and endurance for now. If you are not lifting right you can injure your joint and that will cause a stunt in your growth.

This is adivce you should take...
