Hi, lately I've been reading a lot of mma stuff and its got me interested in starting. that bruce lee quote that anyone out of shape has no business in martial arts really hit me . I just got back from the hospital and lost ten pounds and one of my goals is to gain that back, and in the process fine tune my body/get in shape. I really admire the physique of FRank Shamorck, and one to make my body as great as that before I start martial arts. I'm trying to put together a routine and need for you to tell me if its okay to alternate weight training with calisthenics. For instance monday wednsday, friday calisthenics and then weights the other days followed by a 15 min run? And what kind of weight routine do you suggest? full body like bruce lee or a split?I like calishtenics I like runnning and weights I'm just trying to put it all together.I want to work on being in peak performance over the next two months before I start training. Any commments are welcome.

so you guys dont think it would be too much if I did calisthenics one day and then weight s the next? what I was aiming for in regards to calisthenics was a routine similar to the lions den I can already due 100 squats 30 pushups 60 pullups 10 fingertip pushups and 80 crunches straight and was going to add 5 to each excercise each week till i hit 500 for squats( or till I puke and realize I've gone insane). I'm still lost about weights though should it be full body or split 3 times a week, how many excercises and reps and sets. Diet is another issue for me, since I've been reading a lot of info and each source tells me something different. Is it a gram per pound or per pound lbm or kg? I'm 6'1 175 pounds looking to add 5/10 pounds if that helps.I'm sory if this is too much but I'm so excited and at the same time confused, because alot of the stuff Ive been reading has been bodybuilding stuff.

Incognito is right. If you repeat the same routine over and over, then your chances to continue it will be almost nill. Make your exercises fun, not work. Do a competition against yourself in weights and do it about 2-3 times a week varying to schedule and all. A lot of martial arts isn't just fitness though, but also about focusing your mind and energy. Someone 300lbs could possibly defeat someone buff and seemingly strong fighting physical appearance all because the person in less admired physical appearance knows how to control their "chi" better than the other. Martial arts is not about just fitness, but it does help to be in shape. You need to also practice using your mind and chi/energy type of exercises or a seemingly weaker opponent may defeat you and make all your training seem like nothing. Also try studying many styles, not only will that help you get in shape, but to unlock more of your body and mind's potential.

reddragon,
I have been training with russian kettlebells for nearly two years. The core strength and endurance gains far exceed the mainstream weight training at the local gym. The ballistic nature of kettlebell training develops tendons and ligaments that can take the abuse in hard core martial art training. Many fighters are incorporating kettlebells into their training. You have to do your homework and get proper instruction so you don't hurt yourself with the bells but your training will definitely improve.

I dont know that its necessary to get in shape [B/]before[B] starting m.a. training. The training will help you get in shape and you wont be losing time waiting for something to happen. The sooner you start - the better.
