I don't think it's entirely true that in order to build more muscle mass, you need to lift a lot of weight with less reps.

My uncle has been doing push-ups ever since he began training, he never once bench pressed, and he has the chest of a bench presser.

    What do you think?.

This is a case of genetics. He shares similar traits with body builders as they don't need to life a lot to gain muscle. In a lot of cases people don't have to lift too much but why not build strength to go with that muscle. I remember going to venice beach and seeing this little dude outbenching some muscle head. He didn't look to happy about it. There are two types of muscle fibers in your body called slow twitch and fast twitch. If you are lifting say 25% of your max on any exercise then you are only utilizing your slow twitch muscles. If you lift heavy with few reps then your fast twitch muscles come into play. Fast twitch muscles are much larger and are used for heavier lifting while slow twitch are smaller and are more for endurance. Not everybody has to lift heavy to get large but a lot of people do. I personally can do pushups till my arms fall off but I won't get any bigger from them. I would play it safe and bench heavy just so I know that I am getting big and if that doesn't work then at least I'm getting stronger.

My view is throw trying to bulk up and look impressive out the window and go for strength, speed, and stamina.
