What are your thoughts on continuing training after sustaining a concussion?

I ask this because I got kicked in the head quiet hard on the weekand and was diagnosed with a mild concussion. I've had a major concussion many years ago where I was knocked out for 5 minutes and I had to stay in the hospital, and I've been told that concussions kind of stack up.

This mild consussion happened on Saturday, and I returned to class on Monday... though the classes were really irritating my head because I could feel all the vibrations when I did sudden movements. However it doesn't bug me enough to stop training.

Someone told me that I shouldn't be doing any sparring for a little while. However I figure as long as the other person knows of my situation and doesn't throw any kicks to the head that I should be ok.

I don't want to stop training as I have another tournement in April followed by one in May.

    Any thoughts?

The level of commitment and dedication implied in your post can be counterproductive if you choose not to take care of yourself properly so that you can continue to compete for many, many years.

Missing a tournament in April and/or May has to be balanced against the possibility of damaging yourself so that you can never compete again after that, or even be unable to count your change correctly at the store.

Put another way, if you were a valuable thoroughbred racehorse that had been injured your owner wouldn't put you in a race until you were fully recovered, even if he was certain you'd win, and risk ruining you for any more races.

See your doctor, rest, recover, plan for the future.

Yes I understand this, though my question is, how do I know when I'm good to go?

But it does bug you. Listen to your body. See your doctor. You're talking about your head. You know, that thing that houses your brain!

I saw the doctor already... I went straight to the hospital from the tournement... waited 5 hours.

How do you know if you are good to go come tournement time though?

I suppose, when you feel completely normal, and you can lightly touch/slap your head without feeling any extra pain/discomfort.

A player returning too early could suffer from "second impact syndrome," which may be fatal. This problem is caused by a loss of the automatic control of blood vessels to the brain. Never return to a sports activity until you are cleared by a doctor.

I would check with the doctor....again.....MA's will always be there and tournaments will come and go but you will have to live with the effects of trauma long after it's all over. Listen to the guys here.
