        yup.

1g of fat is 9 calories, 1g of protein (muscle?) is 4. If you limit your caloric intake, and increase your caloric output (eat less, move more), your body will have to burn one of those two (fat or muscle) to make up for the defficiency.

I'm still not clear as to what which is used and when, but it is said that if your daily caloric deficit is too high (i.e you're burning a LOT more calories than you eat), you may start burning muscle (I would guess because the calorie-rich, lighter-weight fat is probably saved for a rainy day). I've heard this referred to as 'starvation mode'.

Of course, less muscle usually means less strength and I'm not sure how good that is for competition, although muscle does weigh more than fat, so better bang for the buck if trying to make your weight class.

Also, how to achieve your goal really depends on what your body is right now. If you have 0% body fat, there's no choice but to burn muscle.

I make some assumptions here... you could probably reach your goal with a 1500-1600 calorie per day diet, assuming you are an active 180lbs and all else being equal. (visit any chain restaurant website and look at their nutritional guide for perspective on how much food that is).

oh, you should know that i have absolutely no experience training anybody in anything.
