  • saturated fat is good for you

You absolutely need saturated fat for the omega-3 fatty acids to be utilized correctly. This is just biochemistry. You need them to get into fat burning mode (growth hormone) instead of just carb-burning (insulin resistance) mode.

I know this seems controversial but it's really just science that gets conveniently overlooked.

Here's an excerpt from a well-researched article with many footnotes:

    * Saturated fatty acids constitute at least 50% of the cell membranes. They are what gives our cells necessary stiffness and integrity.

    * They play a vital role in the health of our bones. For calcium to be effectively incorporated into the skeletal structure, at least 50% of the dietary fats should be saturated.38

    * They lower Lp(a), a substance in the blood that indicates proneness to heart disease.39 They protect the liver from alcohol and other toxins, such as Tylenol.40

    * They enhance the immune system.41

    * They are needed for the proper utilization of essential fatty acids.
Elongated omega-3 fatty acids are better retained in the tissues when the diet is rich in saturated fats. 42

    * Saturated 18-carbon stearic acid and 16-carbon palmitic acid are the preferred foods for the heart, which is why the fat around the heart muscle is highly saturated.43 The heart draws on this reserve of fat in times of stress.

    * Short- and medium-chain saturated fatty acids have important antimicrobial properties. They protect us against harmful microorganisms in the digestive tract.

The scientific evidence, honestly evaluated, does not support the assertion that "artery-clogging" saturated fats cause heart disease.44 Actually, evaluation of the fat in artery clogs reveals that only about 26% is saturated. The rest is unsaturated, of which more than half is polyunsaturated.45

I'm not talking bacon, I'm talking butter, cold pressed olive oil, coconut or sesame oil, chicken fat, beef tallow, etc.

The question is if the benefits of consuming saturated fat outweigh the risks?

Eating these things every once in a while might be o.k., but I imagine eating too many of these things too frequently is a health risk.

Perhaps in moderation and by moderation i mean really wee bits of it.
Saturated fats can't be that good for you... Like smoking(nicotine actually) helps prevent brain diseases such as alzhimers or parkisons but the smoke heavily damages the body.

I'm pretty sure that, according to this research and other research I've been doing, it's excess consumption of refined carbs in sugars and white flours, low levels of magnesium and iodine, vit. deficiencies (especially vitamin C which strengthens the blood vessel walls) and not enough antioxidants that protect from free radicals that lead to heart disease. But it looks like the fats are actually anti-microbial... And folic acid, B6, choline and B12 lower the serum homocysteine levels (high homocysteine in the blood has been correlated with the buildup of plaque in the arteries and the tendency to form clots). These nutrients are mostly found in animal foods.

So basically just eat animal foods rich in B6 and B12, use sea salt for thyroid function, make sure you're getting your vitamins and minerals so your artery walls will be less prone to ruptures and plaque build up, and include antimicrobial fats in your diet.

I'm not saying go to McDonald's every day. I'm saying animal fat is healthier than hydrogenated fat or polyunsaturated oils. Use extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil, too. Eat your egg yolks and organic butter.

Uh huh, just like that research you did on good men = changeable men...I wanna gain excessive weight now by eating blubber and blame it on being big boned....

Just kidding, liz. Interesting topic. There are people living near the Pacific Ocean and the Meditteranean Sea whose diets look like this and they seem to be rather healthy. These folks move around alot with their own bodies too, right?

They may eat coconut cream or virgin olive oil, but they also swim in the ocean to catch fish, dig in gardens to pull out vegetables, herd animals and exert themselves with physical labor.

Their health would be different if they ate their diet and then sat around all day.

Absolutely CORRECT, treelizard. That was always a bunch of scientifically untennable nonsense PROPOGANDA by the AHA.

[B]Humans have been eating saturated fatty acids for 2 million years with great benefit.

From 1951 to 1955 serum cholesterol levels were measured in 1959 men and 2415 women aged between 31 and 65 years who were free of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer. Under age 50 years, cholesterol levels are directly related with 30-year overall and CVD mortality; overall death increases 5% an …

This is VERY VERY damning evidence to the AHA's PROPOGANDA. AND THIS IS ONLY THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG The AHA lied and misquoted the research to fit their ownagenda.

The truth is ALL THE EVIDENCE NEEDED TO THOROUGHLY DEBUNK THE CHOLESTEROL THEORY/ SCAM HAS BEEN AVAILABLE IN MEDICAL JOURNALS FOR DECADES FOR ALL TO READ. THE PROBLEM IS JANE AVERAGE DOES NOT RUMMAGE THROUGH MEDICAL JOURNALS AND READ ALL 23 STUDIES IN FULL TEXT.

Tightly controlled clinical trials have completely failed to produce any reduction in cardiovascular mortality that can be attributed to saturated fat or cholesterol lowering.

The atherosclerotic plaques are comprised MAINLY of FIBEROUS SCAR TISSUE, SMOOTH MUSCLE CELLS AND CALCIUM DEPOSITS,

The substance cholesterol is NOT a fat it is an alcohol.

Numerous populations around the globe eat a diet rich in animal and tropical fats with great benefit and have VERY LOW rates of heart disease

*Masai Dinkas Samburu eat up to 300 grams of saturated fatty acids a day-

Tokeluans (Pacific Islands) eat a diet rich in the saturated oil of the coconut. blood serum levels scientifically measured at 240 ml

COCONUT OIL IS EXTREMELY GOOD FOR YOU

                * Okinawans eat shellfish, eggs, pork, and cook in pork lard. Average Japanese eats more cholesterol than American
                VERY LOW RATE OF CHD

                * Residents of Crete have 70 % of their calories coming from lamb sausage and goat cheese.-VERY LOW RATE OF CHD

Inuits- rich in saturated fatty acids too, NOT JUST Omega 3'S - VERY LOW RATE OF CHD.

The Mediterranean diet is RICH IN SATURATES, with the French having the MOST saturated fatty acids out of the Saturate rich Mediterranean VERY LOW RATE OF CHD-OOOPS!!!
(The area of France that eats the most animal products- goose liver has the LOWEST rate of CHD in France)

Interesting. So how much % of one's diet do you think should be saturated fat?

I think you should definitely e-mail the omnivore guy. He could give you more of a percentage. , definitely more detailed advice. Dr. Ravnskov has peer reviewed his articles and cited research. both sites are terrific scientific information. Wish I could give you the specifics.

No problem, will do. I'm just asking because I've been Zoning, and I'm pretty sold on the diet with a couple exceptions, and it's only 30% fat.

Anyways, I started out my research right here: http://www.westonaprice.org/knowyourfats/index.html

I was very surprised earlier this year when I went to see an herbalist and he told me I needed more healthy sources of protein, he recommended basically more fats and less sweets; adding coconut oil and flax to my diet, and cod liver oil. I was eating tons of carbs and avoiding fat and protein and needed more of it. The explanation is complicated, the short version is that most people who are constantly "detoxing" could just use some chicken soup and a nap, and most people who really need to detox eat too much bacon and rancid fats and will scream bloody murder if you try to take them away.
