  • excuse my vanity

Right then basically im posting to ask some advice about workin the calves. The problem is i only usely do sports specific or compound exercises so ive got pretty meaty thighs an lady calves.........i used to do calve raises and dorsiflection (spelling) about a year ago but stopped any kind of isolation exercise due to the time wasting with non functional exercies for martial arts...........................................but nearing summer im becoming more vanity driven with dropping body fat an all that. This time of year im usely workin hard on CV training and endurance.........so anythin u guys/gals have got up your sleaves is appreciated. cheers

Calf raises all the time. In line at the store, do them. Under your work desk, do them all the time. RUN MORE! Jogging puts really good stress on your calves (watch out for running down hills, bad on knees)

sports specific training with no calve work?

you mind telling me how thats possible?
especially for martial arts specific training, footwork is one of the most important things in any sport. i can hardly imagine you training good footwork without extensive calve work supplementing it.

but, if you want a good calve workout, i suggest you jump rope a lot, do calve raises weighted and un weighted, lots of plyometric jumping exercises, and run/sprint, uphill/regular, weighted unweighted, and on your toes.if you run on your toes you use your calves a lot more instead of going heel to toe.

plyometric jumping exercises, sprint uphill on your toes, and jump rope are probably the best ones in terms of sports specific functionality and great calve workout.

sure calf raises supplement your calf strength but it isnt a specific movement id use in martial arts. The idea of sports specific is to replicate functional movements you'd use in a sport. A calf raise in my mind included in a sports specific workout is a wast of time (especially when your calves get worked in compound movemets like squats/lunges to a certain digree)

but yeh i do jump rope and have started sprints and sure enough when sparring etc im on my toes. Like the title of my thread says "excuse my vanity" im not talkin about sports specific etc was jus pointing out thats my usual training. Im jus tryin to sort out some proportions with my calves and thighs.........got big thighs skinny calves........................lame i know that im bothered but everyone has their vanity driven streak. Havent done plyometric jumps in awhile so ill give it ago and ill find a hill cheers dark.
