  • Diet question...help plz

What would happen if i cut calorie intake below 1500 a day while still eating 5-6 times a day? Would i loose weight faster or would i be doing damage to myself? Would I loose muscle instead of fat?

Im 23 years old, 5'11 and 170lbs trying to cut down to 150-155.Working out 5days a week at MT class also running 5 miles 3 days a week.

    Thanks.

monintor your energy level and view the changes in your apperance. you don't want to sacrafise muscle loss. being 5'10" and 170 you are at a IBW and to much resriction calorie wise may be counter objective

Maintaining a 6 meal a day regiment would certainly help keep your blood sugar level, but to stay consistantly at 1500 calories is low for any man... particularly a physically active man and most of the guys on this board are active martial artists. Your body would eventually catch on to the fact that you were on a severe calorie deficit and your metabolic rate would begin to slow.

Your best bet to cut calories without slowing your metabolic rate is to find out what your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is. BMR is the number of calories that you burn in a 24 hour period if you are inactive... think of yourself as lying in bed all day but not sleeping. You would then modify that number of calories upwards depending on your daily activity level. This will give you a maintenance level of calories per day for your life style. There are websites out there that will guide you through this.

Once you know your maintenance level, start by subtracting 500 calories a day. Over a 7 day period this will add up to a 3500 calorie deficit...equal to 1 lbs of fat... if you are working out, performing resistance training with weights, it will mostly be fat and you can easily increase your loss by adding in some cardiovascular traing 4-5 times a week. You could end up burning up to 2 lbs of fat if you cut your calories by 500 and upping your activity level.
