I studied Shaolin Kung Fu in high school and most recently Wing Chun and have always heard that lifting weights is a bad idea for marital arts.
I'm a huge fan of body weight exercises and isometric exercises for strength training. I recently came across this video combining isometric strength training exercises with "regular" exercises and wanted to see what other martial artists and fighters do for strength training.

In any case, lifting weights is only a bad idea for martial artists who are clueless about lifting weights. Lifting weights can improve strength, speed, explosive power, and endurance -- if you can't use those in your martial arts, it's time to switch martial arts. But you need to lift like a fighter.
