That some wicked advice. I;m not sure if your for, or against electronic devices.

Anyway, I saw that Bruce Lee movie.
His agent, or whoever walks while Bruce Lee has on this thing over his upperbody. He asked the other guy to try it, "It's like doing a thousand pushups." He says
The other guys says, " No thanks, I don't feel like electrocuting myself." And then he gives hima funny look.

These devices do not work to build any muscle. The pulse is not strong enough to cause the micro tears in the muscle that when the tissue repairs itself is known as muscle growth. If the pulse was strong enough you just might be in the hospital!

However, there is one way that it could be argued that the electrical devices stimulate growth. And that is as a massage unit. It is a very effective means of massaging the muscle and ridding it of any of the acid build up that may have occured. It is well known that massage is very effective when used in correlation with a strenth routine.

I personally have one of these devices purchased from my chiropractor. It is called the TENS unit, and it is small but works great. I use it for massage either after lifting very heavy or hitting the mats really hard. And definitely after a stressful day in the office. You can get them for about $100 for a good one, but do not buy it for anything other than a personal, electrically charged masseuse.

Anyone that would use one of these for muscle growth, or fat loss is fooling themselves and potentially showing themselves to be lazy. Get out and train.

The units sold on TV are not strong enough to be of much use. However units are sold of medical grade that can be used for strengthening muscle. By stimulating the muscles you can train the muscle to have more muscle fibers react when stimulated this increases the strenght of the contraction. It will not increase size of the muscle as in bodybuilding.

The medical units usually have at least 4 outputs and a vast assortment of electrodes. COmercial units can run as much as $6,000. If used during weightlifting you would want it to stimulate at the highest point of contraction/effort.

Muscles continuously contracting and relaxing will increase muscular endurance in the long run. and will burn more calories that muscles at rest. So it may be possible to lose some fat, however it is the same as working out, you have to do it long enough at a high intensity and watch your caloric intake.

Might as well just work out,

3 sets of 50 crunches probably isn't enough, because you're not working your entire abdominal region. YOu need to work your upper abs, lower abs, and obliques. Here is a nice routine:

            Double Crunch 3x30
            "Butt-ups" 3x15
            Exercise-ball Crunch 3x10
