As of right now I am broke. I was enrolled in a JKD class for a while but it was $80 a month and neither me nor my parents could pay for it anymore so I'm out. I was wondering if there are any inexpensive books or videos out there that I can use to learn a good overall fighting system and that would also help me with my training. I would like to learn MT, BJJ, something that incorporates a little from every style and is good for self defense. I've had some experience with JKD, TKD, and boxing. I've also looked into police league boxing in my area since its free. Any advice?

I would try the boxing for now because it is what you can afford. I would not recomend training with a video or a book but You might wanna look around and see if there are any Dojo's that charge less. I wish you luck.

well i don't know how old you are but here are some thoughts,
Get a part time job to make enough money to pay 80 a month. I did for many years.
Or talk to the instructor, many good instructors may come up with a way for you to train for less. But if they do, be very appreicative. I have done this and the people just were not worth it. You owe any instructor who will do this a great debt.
See if you can't work for the instructor, clean the school, mow his yard, what ever. If you are serious and in for the long term you will find a way.
I always did.
First thing is to talk to the instructor. Sometimes they are smart enough to work things out for a good student. Sometimes they only care about money.
Remember if they do help you they are taking away from their livelihood and that of their family.

Incite,
I know where you're coming from. I was in your situation when I was younger. What I would recommend is, try a local YMCA or your city's Recreation Center. They usually have some sort of Martial arts program. Or what you can do is go visit a few Martial arts studios or ask your old instructor if you can pass out flyers or help with phone calls for a discount or free limited training (something is better than nothing). Most instructors will allow this, I brought a monthly tution of $90 down to $40 by helping out once a week. I highly recommend you get real hands on training over books or videos. Books and videos were only intended to supplement your training. Well, these were things that I have done when I was too young to legally have a job. Hope this helps and good luck on your training.

For excellent conditioning routines that you can get for free, go to
and look at Scrapper's bodyweight routines. Scrapper is a trainer who runs fitness classes at the Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He is a former NHB fighter who won a Superbrawl competition, and has trained with Egan Inoue. He does have inexpensive tapes available which are fantastic values. The members at www.mma.tv (about 70,000) rave about his workouts, and he has sold lots of these tapes to martial artists all over the world. You can get some of these workouts in print form from his website for free!
You can also look into "Dinosaur" training, which uses cheap or everyday objects such as rocks, sandbags, logs, etc. for lifting use. Go to
and check it out.
