I think it really depends on what your goals are. I personally hit the weights 5 times a week and a I am supposed to be in class 5 times a week also, but I am bound to miss one. Mix in some cardio in that and that is my routine for the week.

          Joe,

You need to edit your reply to say "I am bound to miss three days".

I guess I do now. But five days of classes. Are you doing intense training, or moderate? I only go 2 days a week, but it's intense. There isn't a day in the week where a muscle isn't sore. The other reason that may be, is because I weight train 6 days a week, and 4 days of cardio, preferrably jogging.

First off on the five days of classes if you look at the class schedule of this school you will see that it is not the same everyday, therefore, it is not as bad as you think. As for my intensity, that is something I am working on, because you can always go harder. Being one of the bigger guys in class I don’t get to rest much. Well, as far as the weights. That is where I started, so it is kinda hard for me to slack off from that, but in my growth I have had to move to 1 body part a day and then 1 full day of rest. This year I am incorporating a lot more cardio in my training, so that I don’t get winded as easily and lean my body out. As for soreness, the pain let’s you know you are still alive. I think you should tailor your workout to what you want to accomplish. I have goals for both my MA training and my weight training.

                  builder of muscle,

6 days per week is far too much to train and grow optimally, especially if you are also doing martial arts and running! Your body needs time to recover and grow, and this process occurs while you are resting.

I have written several articles for beginning weight training routines, and they can be seen at

Click on my Strength and Conditioning column and there will be a new article as well as an "archive of past columns. I think they can give you some good ideas how to structure your training to get even better results.

You have to carefully balance things to get the best results. A haphazard approach will slow your progress.
